When Sophina DeJesus, a senior at UCLA, finished her gymnastics floor routine at Pauley Pavilion against Utah, the crowd started demanding a score of 10 from the judges. DeJesus’ performance was posted to YouTube on Feb. 6, 2016, and has received over 17 million hits since then.
The UCLA player profile on DeJesus said that she was a dancer on the television show “Hip Hop Harry.” In the Hip Hop International competition, she and her dance team took first.
DeJesus said that as a child, she took dance, acting and gymnastics lessons. UCLA said DeJesus was a member of the U.S. National Team in 2009, and since that time has placed in bars, beam, uneven bars, floor and all-around.
DeJesus did not get the 10 she hoped for, but the 9.925 she received for her routine, was her career high.
