When people think of biker gangs, they typically imagine Hells Angels roaring through the streets, inciting fear into anyone who dares stand in their way. But not all gruff, leather-laden road warriors seek mayhem and destruction. The Bikers Against Child Abuse, or BACA, have been protecting abused and frightened children since 1995.
By working with state and local officials, BACA seeks out isolated children who have suffered physical, emotional or sexual abuse. When a child is deemed vulnerable, an entire team of more than twenty bikers roar up to the child’s home and offer him or her emotional and physical support. The BACA mission is quite clear; child abuse will not be tolerated, and we are here to protect you.
“Pipes,” one of the lead members of BACA states, “we work with the child to remove their fear. When the fear is gone, that’s when we know our job is done.” With child abuse deaths up nearly 20% in Arizona in the last year alone, Pipes knows that the protection and support his bike gang offers is essential for children who have no one else to turn to. One by one they give each abused child a custom biker vest and say, “You are part of our family now.”
