They took off for Colorado in a rush. This father and daughter wanted a new start and hoped to post up in Lakewood and start settling down as quickly as possible.
The father, James Schweikhard, put it this way:
“I packed everything up that we own in the truck there and we just drove here. It was more of a risk staying in Oklahoma. I couldn’t get a job for anything, couldn’t get a place to live.”
But it wasn’t easy in Lakewood. For one, Jame’s daughter was late to her new school after being escorted by James.
School officials decided to follow James back to his truck and were so shocked at what they found, that they ended up calling the police.
Police arrived and quickly realized that the truck was more than just a vehicle to get to point A to point B. It was also a dwelling for James and his daughter. Their would be housing situation fell through, as did James prospect for a job as the truck had broken down and repairs proved too costly for their budget.
James describes the officer’s reaction:
“I saw them looking at my truck, I said, ‘Officers, what is going on? He said ‘We’re trying to help you.’ I said ‘Ok, I can accept that.’”
Having a history of harassment with law enforcement, James was highly skeptical in regards to the so-called “help”.
But Officer James Butler was not going to sit idly by when he saw the situation James was in. He ended up immediately obtaining shelter for the dad and daughter, while having Sun Valley Automotive to come tow his truck. They were a reputable auto repair company that the officer trusted, and they ended up offering their services for free.
The officer explains his actions:
“It was the right thing to do. Because at any point in time in our lives anyone of us can be in that same situation offering assistance to another human being is the right thing to do.”
James became greatly appreciative of all that has been done to help him out. Turns out other officers also chipped in and gave assistance as well.
“I think it’s awesome, I think it’s really cool, very unexpected, but very cool,” James said.
His previous negative experiences involving law enforcement were completely different here in Lakewood. James and his daughter have a much brighter outlook now than they did first arriving in town, and it’s all been kick started by an officer who went out of his way to do a good deed and help out.
