Being a school custodian can be a thankless job. You spend long hours taking out the trash, mopping the floors, even cleaning up people’s vomit when the job calls for it. As they say, it’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it. That’s what makes the kids at Los Primeros School in Camarillo, California, so special.
Their janitor, Rocky Lopez, has been working at the school for 33 years. Rocky’s never been content to simply push a broom or clean windows, though. He’s used his opportunity to brighten the lives of the students of Los Primeros day in and day out. As one student describes, “he’s nice and positive. He knows how to make our day.” That’s why the kids decided it was time to show Rocky how much they appreciated him.
They contacted Dude. Be Nice apparel, a clothing company that sponsors appreciation projects, to set up a special surprise for Rocky. It’s a well-known fact around campus that Rocky loves candy, so they loaded up coolers with Snickers, Kit-Kats, and more of Rocky’s favorites.
Then, under the guise of calling him in to clean up after a sick student, the kids sprung their trap and shocked Rocky by pouring candy all over him. If that wasn’t enough of a pleasant surprise, the kids also arranged for Adam Snyder, a former player for Rocky’s favorite team the San Francisco 49ers, to show up and give Rocky an autographed football.
The look in Rocky’s eyes demonstrates how worthwhile it can be to give back to someone who gives his all to make the people around him happy. Check out the video for yourself and see the impact that doing something nice for someone can have.
