We usually think of slugs as pests that eat up our gardens and gross us out when we accidentally step on one without shoes on and feel it squish between our toes. But believe it or not, some of them can actually be useful.
The red triangle slug may look strange, but he can actually be a real help around the house. No, he is not a contractor (he doesn’t have the licensing or the thumbs), but he does have one special skill that could save you time and money.
Red triangle slugs are native to Australia.
Their name is derived from the red triangular markings around its breathing hole, also called the pneumostome. Not all slugs are air-breathers, but this guy is.
These slugs can grow to be up 6 inches long, and come in a variety of colors like this bright red fellow.
Most slugs have four tentacles at the front of their head, but the red triangle slug has just two, giving it a singularly weird appearance.
While many species of slug like to eat the tender leaves in your garden, these guys prefer algae and mold. This preference can actually be a boon to homeowners.
A sudden abundance of these odd slugs could mean that you have a real serious mold problem. Some people even suggest using the slugs as a way to naturally and safely get rid of bathroom mold without dangerous chemicals.
Not only are these weird little guys super cool, they could actually save you some real trouble if they help you catch a mold problem early. Good job, nature!
