Baby Born With His Brain Growing In His Nose Is A Real-Life Pinocchio

Each year, there are millions of babies born all over the world. Luckily, with modern medicine and technology this is no longer the life-and-death situation it once was for many mothers and babies. That doesn’t mean that everything always goes off without a hitch, though. Children are still born with various complications, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t able to accomplish incredible things and live happy lives.

Such is the case for sweet little Ollie Trezise.

This sweet boy was born to Amy Poole of Maestag, Wales with encephalocele, a neural tube defect that leads to parts of the brain protruding from openings in the skull.

Poole first became aware of the condition when she had a standard ultrasound at 20 weeks pregnant.

Doctors noticed a growth of soft tissue on Ollie’s nose that shouldn’t have been there. They weren’t able to determine the exact cause, but they were able to give her some time to prepare herself before delivery.

The size of the bump still took Poole by surprise, but she knew she “would love him no matter what he looked like.”

As soon as they could, doctors took Ollie for an MRI, where they diagnosed him with encephalocele. Over the next nine months, his nose grew right along with him.

When the condition began to cause real problems, such as severe breathing difficulties, doctors decided it was time to operate.

For others suffering from the condition, symptoms can also include developmental delays, fluid buildup in the brain, difficulty walking and seizures.

Despite her fears, Poole knew that the risks of not having the surgery done, such as infection and severe injury from a simple knock to the nose, were greater than going through with the procedure.

Surgeons removed the excess sac of brain fluid, rebuilt Ollie’s nose and stitched him back up, leaving a squiggly scar behind. Luckily, his sunny personality was left intact!

Since the surgery, Ollie has made an impressive recovery and is finally able to play freely with his older sister Annabelle.

While Annabelle is actually a bit jealous of Ollie’s nose because of all the attention he gets, their mom worries about what will happen once Ollie goes to school.

“Ollie will probably never look like all the other children and I’m terrified that he will be bullied at school.”

“I don’t want other kids to face the nasty comments that Ollie has, and I think the best way to combat this is by educating people.”

“Ollie is a unique, clever, funny little boy and he amazes me every day,” Poole gushes. “He is my special little Pinocchio, and I will never stop loving him.”

And with an adorable little face like that one, it’s a shock that anyone could ever feel differently.
