Ten years ago, I had damaged and dull hair. I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. I’d buy new shampoo after new shampoo, hoping for a fix. I’d pour olive oil over my scalp, craving the kind of moisture that seemed possible only in commercials. I’d brush gently, I’d brush lots, I’d stop brushing. I’d avoid blow dryers. I’d use “treatment therapies” that cost way too much of my budget. I’d take the advice of anyone, anytime, anywhere.
But nothing changed. My hair remained dry, flat, frizzy, and frustrating.
Then I learned something that changed everything. You know that old saying, “beauty is skin deep”? SHOCKER: IT’S TRUE.
Sure, there are some things you can do to your hair to repair the damage and boost shine, and I’ll show you those first, but the most important thing to consider is what you are feeding your hair. The right ingredients will leave you with softer, stronger, and shinier hair. I’ll show you the right ingredients, don’t worry.
Want to learn more? Here are 15 real ways you can get softer and shinier hair:
1. Choose the right products
I hate to say this, but many hair care and styling products do more damage than good. They can strip the natural oils from your hair, leaving it dry and vulnerable to breakage. As a general rule, avoid products with sulfates because they tend to dry hair out over time.
2. Rinse with cold water
There’s some debate about this one, but I know firsthand how much it works to boost my own shine! The coldness seals the moisture in. Plus, this method wakes me up faster than a cup of coffee. Most days.
3. Make a gelatin mask
Gelatin masks help to restore the protein in your hair (making it stronger and shinier at once). Simply mix some pure, unflavored gelatin in one tablespoon of warm water. Coat your hair fully, leave in for ten minutes, and rinse.
4. Have an aloe massage
Aloe is super moisturizing! Use it as a massaging mask, leaving it in for at least an hour, then rinse.
5. Make a perfect paste
Mash bananas and avocado fruit together. Add a little jojoba oil. Massage into roots and work down to the tips. Let set and then rise.
6. Use eggs and oil
These are ultra-hydrating and nourishing ingredients! Simply mix two egg yolks with two tablespoons of olive oil and dilute with water. Add to your hair. let set, and rinse well. Repeat monthly.
7. Just add beer
Beer boosts shine! How? It’s full of protein from the malt and hops. These proteins help strengthen hair follicles, making your hair smoother and more vibrant.
