If you don’t have a rubber band handy, though, there are still a few ways to keep your apples looking fresh and tasty for longer. To prevent oxidation, you can actually use salt. Make a solution of half a teaspoon of salt and a quart of cold water and soak the apples for three to five minutes.
Your choice of apple can also make a difference in the speed at which they brown. Some apples, like Granny Smith ones, resist turning brown for a long time. If you’re a Red Delicious fan, though, you’ll have the toughest time keeping your fruit looking fresh.
